How to Cut Your Water Bill with Smarter Lawn Watering
Outdoor watering can be half your summer water use, and most of it is wasted. Fix the schedule, sprinkler heads, and controller for real savings.
The EPA estimates that outdoor water use accounts for 30% of household water on average and as much as 60% in dry climates, and that roughly half of it is wasted through evaporation, wind, runoff, and simply watering more than the grass can use. If your summer water bill doubles, this is why.
The fixes are cheap and mostly one-time. Here they are, ordered by savings per effort.
1. Fix the schedule (free, 10 minutes, saves 20–40%)
The default schedule on most controllers — every day, every zone, same runtime — is almost always wrong. Change three things:
Water deeply and infrequently. Two or three times a week, long enough to put down about 1/2 inch each time, beats daily shallow watering. Deep watering trains roots downward, which makes the lawn more drought-tolerant and reduces how often it needs water at all.
Measure how long 1/2 inch takes. Set 4–6 tuna cans or straight-sided containers across a zone, run it for 15 minutes, and measure the depth. If you got 1/4 inch in 15 minutes, the zone needs 30 minutes to deliver 1/2 inch. Do this once per zone; spray heads and rotor heads have very different rates.
Use cycle-and-soak on slopes and clay. If water runs off before it soaks in, split each zone’s runtime into two or three shorter cycles an hour apart. Most controllers support this; on older ones, create a second program.
Water before dawn. Set start times between 4 and 7 a.m.
2. Add a rain sensor or switch to a smart controller ($20–$250, saves 15–30%)
A wired rain sensor ($20–$35) interrupts the schedule when it’s raining. It’s the cheapest fix for the “sprinklers running in a downpour” problem and installs in 20 minutes.
A smart controller ($100–$250, often rebated) goes further: it pulls local weather data, adjusts runtimes for temperature, rainfall, and season, and lets you control zones from your phone. WaterSense-labeled models are independently tested. If you have more than a couple of zones, this is the better investment.
3. Audit the sprinkler heads ($0–$60, saves 10–25%)
Run each zone for two minutes and walk it. You’re looking for:
- Heads spraying the sidewalk, driveway, fence, or house — adjust the arc or swap the nozzle
- Broken or tilted heads geysering water (a $3–$8 part)
- Clogged nozzles with weak or uneven spray — unscrew and rinse the filter screen
- Heads blocked by grass that's grown over them — trim or install a taller riser
- Mixed head types in one zone (sprays and rotors together) — they apply water at very different rates; separate them or replace to match
- Misting instead of droplets — pressure is too high; a pressure-regulating head or a zone regulator fixes it and cuts waste by up to 30%
Upgrade spray nozzles to high-efficiency rotary nozzles ($4–$7 each). They apply water more slowly and evenly, reduce runoff and misting, and are eligible for rebates in many areas.
4. Water the plants, not the air
For beds, trees, and shrubs, drip irrigation delivers water directly to the roots at 90%+ efficiency versus 50–70% for sprays. A drip conversion kit for an existing spray zone runs $30–$60 and connects in an afternoon. Bed plants rarely need the daily soaking a lawn zone gives them.
5. Let the lawn help itself
- Mow high — 3 to 4 inches for cool-season grasses. Taller grass shades the soil, slows evaporation, and grows deeper roots.
- Leave clippings on the lawn; they return moisture and nitrogen.
- Aerate once a year (rent a core aerator for $60–$90 or hire it for $75–$150) so water gets into compacted soil instead of running off.
- Mulch beds 2–3 inches deep to cut evaporation by up to 70%.
- Accept summer dormancy for cool-season lawns in a heat wave. Brown grass in August is dormant, not dead; a half inch of water every 2–3 weeks keeps the crowns alive until fall.
6. Consider shrinking the lawn
The most reliable way to cut outdoor water use is to have less turf. Replacing a strip of side-yard grass nobody uses with mulch, gravel, or native plantings removes a zone from the schedule permanently, and many western utilities pay $1–$3 per square foot for turf removal.
The 30-minute version
- Change the controller to 2–3 days a week, pre-dawn start, and measure runtime with the can test.
- Install a $25 rain sensor.
- Walk each zone once and fix broken or misaimed heads.
- Raise the mower deck.
Check the next water bill against the same month last year. Then decide whether the smart controller and nozzle upgrades are worth it — they usually are, but you’ve already captured the biggest savings for free.
